Welcome to Villa Irlanda

Live the Belle Èpoque in a beautiful Lucchese Art Nouveau villa. Between the majestic Apuan Alps and the Apennines in the stunning Serchio Valley (Mediavalle) the Villa Irlanda sits at the foot of the glorious Garfagnana nature park. Built by a local family of emigrants as a vacation home and named as such in honour of their beloved adopted country Ireland, it was constructed in the early 1900’s in the Liberty style. Still in the family, it is now owned by an international opera singer and a concert pianist and was fully restored in 2009.

The villa retains many original features including frescoed ceilings, stained glass doors, a beautiful marble and wrought iron staircase and a wealth of antique Lucchese terrazzo floors. The property also boasts much of the original furniture commissioned by the present owner’s grandparents at the time of the initial building. Situated across the piazza from the rustic Barga railway station it is perfect for those who wish to use public transport to explore around Lucca, Pisa, Florence and the nearby Garfagnana. In fact for those flying into Pisa there is a direct train from Pisa Centrale to Barga. Car hire is also available from Pisa Airport and ample parking also exists for those who do arrive by car. A pizzeria, rosticceria, steak house, bar as well as chemist are all within a couple of minutes walk.

The centre of the medieval walled town of Barga is five minutes away by car or bus. As one walks the ancient cobbled streets passing many antique palazzi one winds one’s way up to arrive at the historic 11th century Duomo which sits at the pinnacle of the town. From there breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Serchio valley below can be enjoyed.

Barga also hosts an Opera and Jazz festival as well as many diverse Sagre (local food festivals) which run throughout the summer. Selected as one of “I Borghi più Belli D’Italia” (The most beautiful towns in Italy) it more than lives up to the title. Apart from its charm, an abundance of shops, bars and restaurants makes Barga a place you will want to visit again and again.

Villa Features

The villa offers four double bedrooms, three of which are en suite and one with private bathroom directly opposite. All are furnished with their beautiful original antique period furniture and fitted with top of the range new mattresses.

Three of the rooms can be adapted as twin beds if required. Each bedroom is fully equipped with central heating, Wi-Fi internet connection, English satellite television DVD player and hairdryer. There is also a fitted mosquito blind which can be lowered should one wish to leave a window open during the night.

Breakfast consists of fresh bread, local meats and cheeses, fruit juice, tea or coffee and homemade marmalade and jams. This can be taken in the dining room or on the garden terrace should one favour eating al fresco. The garden is well furnished with tables and chairs to sit and unwind with friends and family. Access to the garden is through the elegant salotto where you can relax, read or play cards should the weather be either too warm or on that rare occasion when it may rain.
